Boy in an Alley

In 2010 my family was fortunate to travel through China. Many thanks to our good friends the Thompson’s for arranging our fantastic trip which included a day trip to the the water town called Zhouzhuang. Described as the Venice of China, this is an amazing city steep in tradition and now tourism.

While making our way through this beautiful ancient town, I saw this local boy playing in an alley. I particularly like the lighting and the expression of the boys face as he plays with his toy on the wall. I have used a B&W treatment to emphasise the lighting and hope you also like this candid urban photo.

[Other Things] Free Tibet

[Other Things] are blogs or references to “stuff” that are of great interest or importance to me. I hope you find some time to check them out & that they help in some small way. Enjoy, Marc

After travelling through Tibet in 2011, I was candidly ignorant (to what has happened) & dismayed by what is currently happening in Tibet. While there are typically at least 2 sides to every story, the evidence that the Tibetan culture is rapidly disappearing is difficult to ignore. In a world of international media & global support for minority groups, equality, etc it is incredibly sad events in Tibet are largely ignored.

The internet is full of web sites requesting support to Free Tibet & the video below is from the Australian Tibet Council & their Tibet Advocacy Project. I hope you find this interesting & spend more time reading about the amazing Tibetan people & their beautiful country.

Great Wall of China

The Great Wall

My family & I visited good friends the Thompson’s in 2010. As this was our first big family trip we were somewhat nervous with our intention to cover Shanghai, Beijing & Xi’an. Thankfully the Thompson’s were terrific hosts & Lisa organised some fantastic personalised tours that meant we all had an awesome trip & memories that will last a life time.

The Great Wall of China is famous for so many reasons & in Australia none less than the infamous Telstra advertisement where the uninformed (without Telstra broadband internet) father tells his son “the wall was built to keep the rabbits out“.

The day we visited The Wall was just 1 of 3 blue sky days we had during our entire trip. We were very lucky indeed & in more ways than just this one.  This is a 2:1 ratio single image panoramic photo of the Great Wall snaking it’s way along the mountain ridge lines. Needless to say, The Wall is an extremely popular tourist destination for the Chinese & overseas tourists alike & this can cause many a frustrations for any photographer attempting to capture a postcard style view. I hope this gives an impression of the amazing
